These are the top 10 cities by population in the United States, according to the 2010 Census

But many of these are also huge, sprawling places. Eight of the top ten cities by population are also in the top 25 cities by land area. It's easy to fit lots of people within large city limits. The scatter plot below shows land area and population of major American cities.

So if all cities had the same geographic footprint, which would have the most people? This chart shows the populations of the cities above, along with their surrounding metro areas for proper comparison. The downtown populations are calculated using the population densities of concentric rings radiating out from the City Hall of each city. Adjust the slider to set a common 'city limit' and see how many people live inside that limit in each metro area.
